More of My Fiction
When I started writing again in 2023, I dove into a story inspired by the question, “What would happen if you didn’t clone someone — just built them a new body, then duplicated their neural structure and copied over their memories?” The note card where I scribbled down semi-coherent thoughts at you-must-be-kidding o’clock in the morning is still on my nightstand. That story became Tabula, the first book in a trilogy that dug into ideas related to identity — individual, collective, and “other.”
This page will share information about the fiction I have at various stages of preparation. For a long time, I focused just on novels; in summer 2026, I enrolled in Mary Robinette Kowal’s short story intensive class, and as the products of that class start to make their way into the market, I’ll be sharing links to them here as well. For starters, though, here’s a little about four of the novel-length manuscripts in my creative “pipeline.”
Beneath the Flames
Beneath the Flames is a portal fantasy in a world beyond the Thinnings, where a character from Through the Thinning meets a displaced young man and his dog from our world, and the three of them have to navigate a violent and dangerous landscape to reclaim what they’ve lost.
Current status: Draft one complete. Although not a “sequel” to Through the Thinning, it expands that universe and will likely be my next focus for revision. The challenge here (okay, there are several…) is that I started in the wrong point of view, and have several chapters near the beginning that are going to end up tossed into Scrivener’s “snapshots” window and fully re-written. Or just cut. The first draft was 168k words, which is longer than it really needs to end up.
The Tabula trilogy
Working titles: Tabula, Rasa, and Locke’s Box
The Tabula trilogy is a sprawling speculative fiction trilogy that begins on a near-future Earth, then shifts to a slightly more distant-future colony on the moon, cut off from Earth after a series of catastrophic wars and the intervention of two AIs that are, for the time being, asleep.
Tabula: A young woman with no memories of her own, a body-swapped son of privilege, and a chimp with a Ph.D. (and occasional murderous impulses) must stop a scientist and his ultra-rich benefactor from activating uncontrollable nanotech that could grant immortality – or destroy the world.
Current status: I’ve completed two rounds of revisions, but haven’t offered it for beta reading just yet. I’m happy that it’s the story I wanted to tell; now I just want it to live up to the story in my head!
Rasa: On a lunar colony cut off from Earth, a bounty hunter searches for his missing love while struggling to untangle a broader set of mysterious disappearances, and the emergence of a new strain of humanity.
Current status: One draft and one “cleaning” round of revisions. I want to do a structural pass next, to make sure the character arcs for Raze, Sister, and Aspen (I really didn’t mean to fall in love with Aspen…) make sense, and that the plot tracks.
Locke’s Box: When an attack on a popular lunar club leaves the building and all its inhabitants trapped in time, a bounty hunter and a bodyguard have to navigate the fringes of the underworld, the heights of society, and the brutal depths of the lunar military to uncover the role a recluse and a pair of recently-awakened AIs might have played — and save everyone they care about.
Current status: First draft completed.
